The prevalence of cataracts has always been on the rise with addition of 3.8 million cataracts cases year on year basis in India which reveals still a lot of awareness needs to be spread about eye care and how to take care of eye related disorders. Looking at the prevalence of cataracts it is 93.5% in rural areas and 57.1% in the urban areas.

Carrots: Carrots are a rich source of Vitamin A and are crucial for good vision. The role of Vitamin A is to keep the cornea healthy and is needed when the light is very dim. Carrots are also believed to have mainly lutein and zeaxanthin—antioxidants that may reduce the risk of cataracts by protecting the lens from oxidation. Getting carrots into your diet schedule, especially in your salads and soups, is the best way to gain Vitamin A easily.

Spinach: Spinach, also called Palak, is an essential food, a powerhouse of nutrients, and one of the most helpful foods for eye health. Spinach contains antioxidants, mainly lutein and zeaxanthin, which are also present in the retina of the eyes, acting as a filter to protect the retina from blue light and thereby reduce oxidative stress. Spinach also contains vitamin C antioxidants, which protect against cataract formation by neutralizing free radicals that might otherwise damage the lens. Spinach can easily be incorporated into the diet as a salad, smoothie, or veggie.

Blueberries: Blueberries play a significant role when it comes to eye health. Moreover, they are full of antioxidants and are an essential source of vitamins, mainly vitamins C and E, which protect your eyes from oxidative damage. Blueberries’ anti-inflammatory actions help strengthen the eye capillaries, especially anthocyanins, which add to this effect and protect vision. Many people consume fresh blueberries in smoothies or as a topping for yogurt or oatmeal. Therefore, in the fight against eye disease, an essential food in any diet, blueberries stand as heroes as they prevent our eyes from eye diseases like macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and also cataracts.

Salmon contains astaxanthin, a carotenoid necessary to protect the eyes from free radicals and thereby preventing cataract formation. It also contains docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) which is a source of omega-free fatty acid. Women consuming salmon on a regular basis, say 3 to 4 times a week, have a lower risk of developing cataracts as compared to women who occasionally have fish only once a month.

Nuts and seed :

Nuts and seeds are another significant and excellent source of vitamin E. Being an antioxidant, it protects the membranes of eye cells and thereby reduces degeneration and the risk of cataracts. Eye health can be enriched with nuts and seeds like almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts,  peanuts, sunflower seeds, flaxseeds, and chia seeds.You can add these nutrient-dense foods to salads and yoghurt or take them as a snack.
