What is Diabetic Retinopathy?

Diabetic Retinopathy, sometimes called diabetic eye disease (DED), is a medical condition in which diabetes mellitus damages the retina. Injury to the blood vessels of the light-sensitive tissue in the back of the eye causes this condition. Diabetic retinopathy may show no symptoms or only moderate vision impairment initially. Diabetic retinopathy is more likely to develop in those who have had diabetes for a prolonged time.

    Frequently Asked Questions

All diabetics are at risk, whether they have Type I or Type II diabetes. The longer a person has diabetes, the more likely they are to have complications. Diabetic Retinopathy is also influenced by genetics.

Diabetic Retinopathy is divided into four stages- mild, moderate, and severe nonproliferative and the final, proliferative. There will be swelling in tiny portions of the retina’s blood vessels in the first stage. Some of the blood vessels in the retina will get clogged in the second stage. The third stage is accompanied by more clogged blood vessels. Proliferative retinopathy is the final and the advanced stage of the disease.

Take control of your diabetes, keep an eye on your blood sugar level, maintain healthy blood pressure and cholesterol level and stop smoking or using tobacco. If your eyesight dramatically changes or becomes blurry or spotty, see a doctor immediately.
