Understanding Glaucoma And Exploring Ayurvedic Perspectives
Glaucoma encompasses a collection of ocular conditions that gradually harm the optic nerve, marked by the deterioration of nerve tissue leading to vision loss. Individuals affected by glaucoma may experience the depletion of nerve tissue, culminating in the impairment of their vision. According to Ayurveda, Glaucoma is described as a condition arising from the imbalance of the three fundamental body processes: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Ayurveda is the answer to the question -can glaucoma be treated without surgery? Ayurvedic treatments aim to alleviate obstructions in the flow of aqueous fluid within the eye, thereby regulating intraocular pressure to a normal range.

Data & Statistics For Glaucoma From WHO & Other Research Studies
For individuals aged between 40 and 80 years, the global prevalence of glaucoma is 3.54%. The prevalence of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is most pronounced in Africa at 4.20%, while primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) is most prevalent in Asia with a prevalence of 1.09%. In the year 2013, the estimated count of people aged 40 to 80 years worldwide with glaucoma was 64.3 million. This number increased to 76.0 million in 2020 and is projected to reach 111.8 million in 2040. According to the Bayesian meta-regression model, men exhibited a higher likelihood of having POAG compared to women, with an odds ratio of 1.36. Additionally, individuals of African descent were more prone to POAG than those of European ancestry, with an odds ratio of 2.80. Furthermore, urban residents were found to have a higher likelihood of POAG compared to their rural counterparts, with an odds ratio of 1.58. Based on published data by the government, it is estimated that India is home to approximately 11.2 million individuals aged 40 years and above who are dealing with glaucoma. Among these, around 6.48 million are likely affected by primary open-angle glaucoma, while roughly 2.54 million could be impacted by primary angle-closure glaucoma. The collective number of individuals potentially affected by any form of primary angle-closure disease could reach 27.6 million.

Frequently Asked Questions
Glaucoma is often associated with elevated eye pressure, although this correlation is not absolute. Aqueous humor, a fluid present in our eyes, serves to nourish and energize the eye, functioning similarly to blood albeit colorless to avoid tinting our vision red. This fluid must circulate constantly. Just as individuals can experience high blood pressure, high eye pressure is also possible.
The precise reasons behind why some individuals develop glaucoma while others do not remain not entirely elucidated. Nonetheless, various factors contributing to its onset have been identified. Age constitutes the foremost risk factor, with nearly 10% of individuals aged 75 and above grappling with glaucoma. Those with a family history of the condition, such as a parent, may also face an elevated risk. Furthermore, specific types of glaucoma exhibit a correlation with ethnicity, particularly among individuals of African, Caribbean, and Asian origin.
There are several Ayurvedic treatments for Glaucoma available, including:
Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa): This herb occupies a prominent role in Glaucoma treatment. Its diuretic attributes aid in disease management by expelling excess eye fluid. Furthermore, it safeguards the optic nerve, curbing intraocular pressure.
Triphala: Another key Ayurvedic herb for Glaucoma, Triphala is often employed as an eyewash. It effectively diminishes intraocular pressure, averting vision impairment. Additionally, the herb’s anti-inflammatory properties shield the optic nerve from harm.
