What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a set of eye diseases that cause vision loss by damaging the optic nerve. The optic nerve connects the eye to the brain making it essential for proper vision. Excessively high pressure in your eye is often the source of this damage. Glaucoma-affected eyes are referred to as glaucomatous. Many types of glaucoma have no symptoms, one may not detect a difference in vision until the illness has progressed significantly.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Aqueous humour is a clear fluid that constantly forms in the back of the eye. This fluid fills the front of the eye as it is produced. It then exits the eye through iris channels. The natural pressure in the eye, known as intraocular pressure (IOP), can rise if these channels are closed or somewhat clogged. A high IOP causes damage to the optic nerve, which, in turn, may result in Glaucoma.

Open-angle, closed-angle, and normal-tension glaucoma are the three major types of glaucoma. Open-angle glaucoma is the most widespread, in which the drainage angle for fluid within the eye stays open. Closed-angle glaucoma is a medical emergency.

If you are at even the slightest risk for glaucoma, you should have frequent checkups with your ophthalmologist. Steroids taken orally or applied around the eyes are the most likely to increase ocular pressure. If you’re using any form of steroid, notify your doctor. When participating in sports, always wear protective glasses. Do not put your head below your heart for long durations if you have glaucoma or are at high risk of developing it.
