Ayurvedic Treatment For BRAO

Branch Retinal Artery Occlusion (BRAO) is a serious eye disorder in which the smaller arteries that carry blood to the retina get blocked. This sudden blockage and vision loss is painless in the affected area of the eyes. In many instances, BRAO is related to cardiovascular disease and needs immediate medical attention to stop further vision loss, but you could rely on Ayurvedic treatment for BRAO.

    Sudden onset of floaters

    What causes BRAO occurrence?

Branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) occurs when small arteries in the retina, the light-sensitive nerve layer at the back of the eye, become blocked. The most common cause of BRAO is thrombosis, where a blood clot forms. In some cases, the blockage is due to an embolus, a clot that travels from another part of the body. If the artery supplying the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision, becomes blocked, central vision can be lost suddenly. After a BRAO event, vision may range from normal (20/20) to only being able to perceive hand movement. BRAO carries significant risks for vision, so if you have experienced it or have high blood pressure, regular check-ups with your ophthalmologist are crucial.

    Frequently Asked Questions

In most cases, recovery from BRAO occurs naturally, with 80-90% of patients regaining visual acuity of 20/40 or better without treatment. However, some levels of visual field loss often remain.

Patients with branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) usually experience sudden, painless, partial vision loss in one eye. Visual field defects can be either central or sectoral, but some patients may not exhibit any symptoms.

BRAO occurs when the small arteries in the retina are blocked. Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO), a blockage of the central artery in the retina, is considered a form of eye stroke and increases the risk of a brain stroke.

In CRAO, patients experience vision loss across the entire visual field, while in BRAO, vision loss is limited to part of the visual field (hemifield defect). If a cilioretinal artery is spared, CRAO patients may retain 20/20 vision.

Ayurvedic treatment for BRAO focuses on natural and non-invasive methods, such as detoxification through Panchakarma therapies, like Virechana (therapeutic purgation) and Basti (medicated enema), to remove toxins and improve blood circulation. Additionally, herbal remedies like triphala, ginkgo biloba, and bilberry are used to support eye health and enhance blood flow.

Ayurveda recommends a diet rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids while avoiding saturated fats, smoking, alcohol, and stress. Regular exercise and yoga are also encouraged to promote overall health and well-being and support eye function.

Yes, an Ayurvedic expert will personalize the treatment, prescribing specific eye drops to nourish and strengthen the retinal tissues. Treatments such as Netra Tarpana, where medicated ghee is used to rejuvenate the eyes, may also be recommended for improving retinal health in BRAO patients.
