Holistic Ayurvedic Solutions for Cataract Management

According to a World Health Organization report, approximately 2.2 billion people suffer from vision impairments, whether near or far-sighted, and at least half of these cases could have been prevented. Cataracts, a condition characterized by the clouding of the eye’s lens, stand as one of the primary culprits behind global vision loss. Over time, the incidence of cataracts has been on the rise worldwide, including in India. Many patients do not wish to opt for surgical treatment and it is good news for them that cataract treatment without surgery is possible in Ayurveda.

India has witnessed a notable uptick in cataract cases in recent years, primarily attributed to factors such as increased tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, and rising obesity rates. Additionally, heightened exposure to harmful UV rays has contributed to this surge in cataract cases.

Factors that can cause cataract

The majority of cataracts develop due to natural age-related changes in your eyes. As we all age, cataracts tend to form gradually. Cataracts impair your ability to see clearly because the cloudy lens obstructs the passage of light. Additionally, the lens can become opaque, and its color may shift to yellow or brown, altering your perception of colors. After reaching the age of 40, the proteins in your eye’s lens naturally start to degrade, with most cataracts arising from these inherent transformations. Ayurveda has the answer to the question that many want to ask, is cataract cure without surgery even possible? Yes! It is possible under the guidance of esteemed doctors like Dr. M. S Basu and his team, cataract can be cured without surgery.

Certain factors, aside from aging, increase the likelihood of developing cataracts. These include:

A family history of cataracts at a young age.

Eye injuries.

Prior eye surgery to address conditions like glaucoma or other eye ailments.

Use of steroids, either systemically or topically.

Radiation therapy for cancer or other medical conditions.

Prolonged exposure to sunlight, especially without protective sunglasses.

Ayurveda says

Ayurveda, often revered as the cornerstone of holistic healing, offers remedies for various health issues, including cataracts. According to this ancient medical system, cataracts are referred to as Linganasha or Timira. Ayurvedic doctors believe that cataracts develop as a consequence of heightened Vata dosha in the body. This dosha aggravation leads to bodily dehydration, culminating in the clouding of the eye’s lens and subsequent vision impairment.

Ayurvedic ways to deal with cataract:

Some natural ways to deal with Cataract are mentioned below:

  • Mahaa triphalaa ghrita

Mahaa triphalaa ghrita  is often recommended as an internal cataract treatment remedy. This medicinal preparation primarily consists of triphala and cow ghee. Triphala nourishes and fortifies the nerves and other eye tissues, while ghee is renowned for its ability to balance the aggravated Vata dosha. Furthermore, triphala contains amla, rich in vitamin C, which makes it especially effective in the early stages of cataracts.

To prepare this remedy, take a tablespoonful of Triphala choorna and add it to a tumbler of water in the evening. Cover and set it aside for 12 hours. In the morning, strain the mixture through a clean cloth. Use this strained liquid both for eye wash and internal consumption.

For internal use, a combination of triphala, turmeric, and yashtimadhu (mulathi) powders, totaling three to six grams, can be taken with honey or ghee. This combination helps slow down the formation of cataracts.

Chandrodaya varti

Chandrodaya varti is an external preparation used to address cataracts. Rub it on a clean stone with sterile water and apply the resulting paste as collyrium. This preparation has a mild irritant effect, causing increased tearing of the eyes and enhancing blood circulation. It is one of the best Ayurvedic treatments of cataract removal without surgery and also provides nourishment to the eye tissues.

  • Amla or Amalaki

Alternatively, you can take one liter of amla juice, thicken it, and add 50 grams of ghee and 50 grams of honey. Apply this mixture externally.

Triphala powder

Boil 1 teaspoon of Triphala powder and consume it before bedtime.

  • Coriander, fennel, pepper & Almonds

For the second and highly potent remedy, blend 100 grams of coriander (dhania), 10 grams of black pepper, 100 grams of fennel, and 100 grams of almonds. Take one teaspoon of this mixture with a glass of milk before going to sleep. If you don’t have diabetes, you can also add some sugar.
